Fun Home, a graphic novel penned and illustrated by Alison Bechdel, is both comical and tragic. Recommended reading would be Adrielle Mitchell's “Spectral Memory, Sexuality and Inversion: An Anthological Study of Alison Bechdel's Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic. Although Bechdel's name is familiar to me, I must admit that this is the first work of hers I've seen. This novel expertly shows how comics . In anticipation of Alison Bechdel's forthcoming graphic novel, Are You My Mother?: A Comic Drama, I recently read her award-winning 2006 release, Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic. It is about her being raised in Pennsylvania and her father's suicide as well as about her realizing she is a lesbian and coming out to her family. It is an autobiography with elements reminiscent of both Foxtrot and Six Feet Under (I know; how is that possible?). Take Alison Bechdel's graphic novel “Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic,” which dedicates seven panels to cicadas. Alison Bechdel's Fun Home is one such example of a graphic novel making use of comics as a means of opening a discourse about the scars family members leave on their children and finding some form of closure through sharing these stories with others.
